Weekend Recap (Fireworks, Butterflies, and Family Photos)

As I mentioned on the Fourth of July - I spent the weekend with all the extended family at my parents house in Midlothian, VA for a much needed vacation. It was a fantastic weekend full of fishing, Texas Hold'Em, and just good-ole-fashioned time spent with people you love.

The large majority of the photos we took over the weekend were just happy-snaps of the kids playing in the sprinklers and enjoying the basics of a childhood summer. I won't make you look through family photos. (at least not in this post)

We did however, have some beautiful butterflies in the backyard which really wanted their pictures taken. Reagan, my four-year-old, found one, ran up to me, and insisted that I take some pictures of it, before quickly returning to playing with her cousins. I obliged, and captured this photo.

I also, followed some of the tips from last Friday's post, and captured this image of fireworks across the lake from my parents' backyard.

I love both pics. I went to Goochland for my first attempt at fireworks. Figured Dogwood Dell would be too crowded and crazeeee to set up a tripod. We sat on the school's football field and the fireworks went up behind the light standards. I had my 55-250mm on and zoomed up and over the lights. Got a lot of good shots, actually, but half of them didn't shoot up as high as the other half, so a lot of my shots have the fireworks only in the very bottom of the frame. To add insult to injury, a teenage friend of ours got pics just as good as mine with a P&S. (and because she was shooting hand-held she was able to fill the frame with all the fireworks.) That was humbling.
