Back on August 7th, around the time of a the new moon and a rare summer night with clear skies, I managed to convince my mom to head up to Shenandoah National Park with me for a night hike. The plan was to head to the top of Hawksbill Mountain, a favorite destination in the park, to use its clear view at the summit to photograph the night sky. At this point, I have to give some serious points to my mom, who despite her fears of being in the woods at night, braved the trip to come along. She did amazingly well and was rewarded, as I was, with some special time together and view of the night sky the way God intended it to look.
The shot below is almost straight out of the camera. I did a very little bit of post processing to remove a little high frequency noise in the shot and to darken the black of the sky, but for the most part the camera did an amazing job capturing the image. As each shot was processed by the camera and eventually displayed on the back preview screen, my mom and I found ourselves sitting in anticipation as each shot popped up. This was the one that got the biggest "WOW! Look at that one!" of the evening.
